The beautiful east coast lies opposite mainland Greece and Albania and is ideal for snorkelling and water sports. You can also hire a boat to explore deserted beaches or drop in at one of the many seaside restaurants. On this coast Gerald Durrell wrote his famous book “My Family and other Animals”.
Its location and history make it unique amongst the Greek islands. The Venetians ruled here for four hundred years, followed by the French and then the British and all have left their mark, notably in the wonderfully varied architecture of Corfu Town, a deserved UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful small towns in the Mediterranean.
The west coast has steep cliffs and long golden sandy beaches. The varied landscape, from rolling hills and valleys to dramatic mountain ranges, continually bewitches the eye. Wet winters and long, hot dry summers provide a dramatically lush vegetation and the island boasts over four million olive trees as well as countless cypresses and oaks.
